Summary:  This personal photo-essay merges natural history and personal history by acquainting readers with the habitat that inspired him to become a nature photographer: the American prairie. Besides describing the experiences that led him to hunt with his camera, he introduces various types of prairies, the animals that live there, what threatens their habitat, and how it can be saved.

Prairie dogs, black-footed ferrets, bison, badgers and coyotes is included in Brandenburg's anecdotal story about his career and deep concern for the American prairie. Young readers will especially loveBrandenburg's description of an encounter with a rattlesnake.
