After Columbus: The Horse's Return to America by Herman J. Viola

Grade:  3-6

Summary:   At some point in America's history, the horse lived upon its land, but, at the time of Columbus' arrival, the horse had disappeared. ON his second voyage, Columbus reintroduced the horse to the Western Hemisphere and in 1519, Hernan Cortes brought the first horses back to the mainland of North America when he led soldiers into Mexico.

Through the 16th and 17th centuries, horses were bred in the Spanish settlements that followed. No North America Natives had control or ownership of horses until the 1680 revolt against the Spaniards by the Pueblo tribe in Santa Fe. From that point onward, horses spread northward from tribe to tribe---and forever changed the lives of those who acquired them.
