The success of Free Flight on its self-titled debut album reinforces a theory that has long been held by musicians to whom eclecticism is a way of life. What it demonstrated, in fact, has often been proven in the annals of jazz and classical music: far from being opposite or irreconcilable forces, the two art forms have in common enough elements to enable them, in the hands and pens of gifted people, to overlap logically and with complete success. As Dr. Herb Wong observed in his opening comments on the previous Free Flight outing, "The 1980's represent a period in which (this) cross fertilization is more natural than during any previous time." He might have added that this is due in large measure to the all embracing values of the typical artist in this decade.
