However, rather than fill up the ranks of her contest with fresh-faced youngsters, this queen of daytime television instead chose a slightly older group, most of them married with families and day jobs. Among the eight semi-finalists that make up the talent on this collection are bartender Jackie Perkins (pouring herself into the Deborah Cox slow jam "Nobody's Supposed to Be Here"), Lorenzo Owens (a soaring take on Leon Russell's "A Song for You"), and Joe Herzog (a boisterous rendition of Elton John's "Your Song").LaShell Griffin proved to be the grand-prize winner by strutting her considerable talent. Griffin impresses by channeling Whitney Houston on a trio of songs ("Where Do Broken Hearts Go," "The Greatest Love of All," and "One Moment in Time") along with "Free," a gospel-tinged, inspirational number penned specifically for this Detroit native. With POP STAR CHALLENGE, Winfrey once again succeeds in melding a winning concept into something appealing for her audience. |
