Before becoming a star in 1939's STAGECOACH, John Wayne established his persona in a number of B-Westerns in the 1930s. Two of those films are featured here, WINDS OF THE WASTELAND and SAGEBRUSH TRAIL. In WINDS OF THE WASTELAND, Wayne plays a Pony Express rider who finds his days are numbered with the advent of the telegraph. It was made after Monogram, which had produced Wayne's earlier Westerns, merged with Mascot Pictures to form Republic, which resulted in higher budgets for the films. SAGEBRUSH TRAIL is one of those earlier Monogram films, and finds Wayne accused of a murder he didn't commit. He escapes from prison to find the true criminal, but is shocked to discover that a friend may be the man behind the deed. WINDS OF THE WASTELAND and SAGEBRUSH TRAIL offer a glimpse into Wayne's early days, before stardom cemented his legendary status.
