These two little Lefton white Porcelain China dishes or plates depict the beautiful Great White Egret common in Florida. These decorative dishes are made in the shape of scallop shells and were designed as souvenir dishes, the word Florida is written in gold script at the bottom of each dish. The Egrets are wading in the water among the reeds or cattails. Many people in error often call these birds Herons or Storks, but they are quite different. The shell dishes are trimmed in gold as is the center transfer painting. The birds have an opalescent shine to them. The scene is done is colors of white, blue, sandy beige or tan with gold trim around the scene and around the dish itself.
The Lefton China Company was founded by George Zolton in Chicago, Illinois in the 1940s. They were distributors of ceramic gift-ware that was made overseas.
These two dishes are approximately 5 1/2 inches across and 1 inch deep. Red and Gold Labels on back read "Lefton Trade Mark Exclusives Japan”. The gold stamp on the back has Lefton China with the Crown Hallmark below and ©1987 with Geo. Z. Lefton in script and the number 08148.
The dishes are in great condition, no chips or cracks. There is some wear on the gold border in the center of the plate. I believe you can see in the enlarged pictures. There is no crazing.
This would be a great set to add to your collection of Wading Birds such as Egrets, Herons, Flamingos, Storks, etc.
