Contributors and Contents:
MARK ULRIKSEN paints pictures of the famous and infamous, newsmakers and homemakers, musicians and athletes, dogs and politicians. His art has graced the covers of The New York Times Magazine, Time, Newswt The Atlantic Monthly and The New Yorker, where he has published more than 150 illustrations as well as 20 covers since becoming a regular contributor in 1993.
DANIELE MELANI hangs out in a small village outside of Milan, producing art on any surface he can get his hands on be it a piece of scrap wood, can vas, newsprint or board. This artist grew up in Rome, traveled to the U.S. to study jewelry design and graphic design, then returned to his native Italy to be an illustrator. His highly personal style has grace, the covers of books, magazines and too many clients to count. Now he's retreated from his illustration tc concentrate on his fine art side.
MARC BURCKHARDT utilizes the cultural symbols found in
everything from Byzantine icons, Mexican retablos and American folk art to convey modern ideas and
themes. His work has appeared in National Geographic, Rolling Stone, Time, and The New York Times, and can also
be found in the private collections of publisher Jann Wenner and the late Johnny Cash.
In our last issue we introduced our Icon Series honoring living artists who have made a unique contribution to the world of illustration. Our second featured illustrator is the wonderful BARBARA NESSIM, an
award-winning artist/educator who was instrumental in introducing computer illustration as an art form. Her simple, sensuous line drawings are at once distinctive and identifiable and have found a place both in the commercial world of illustration as well u in international art collections and exhibitions. Barbara has been using the computer to create illustrations since 1980 and has lectured widely on the subject.
VICKI MORGAN and GAIL GAYNIN join us again for the third in their series of insightful commentary, this time speaking to what illustrators should do during a dry spell.
A special thanks goes to our talented writers who take time out of their busy schedules to write about their fellow artists. John Cuneo takes us inside the home and studio of Mark Ulriksen. John, whose work can be seen each month in Esquire magazine's sex column was recently awarded both a gold and silver medal from the Society of Illustrators.
And Fabian Negrin provides us a delightful profile of fellow artist and good friend Daniele Melani. Fabian, a native Argentinean, began illustrating children's books during his studies in Mexico. He now lives and works in Milan.
Joel Nakamura writes about his friend Marc Burckhardt. Joel blends folk art and sophisticated iconography using a neoprimitive technique for clients including Time, The Los Angeles Times, U.S. Near and World Report, Lego, and Nike.
Adding to the list of contributors are photographers Leslie Flores, who took the wonderful photos of Mark Ulriksen's studio and home.
Michele Sereni, who gave us the inside peek at Daniele Melani's hillside villa and studio outside Milan
and Katarzyna Gruda, who provided the portrait of Barbara Nessim in her New York studio.
3x3 is pleased to announce the addition of a number of new interns. Joining us are recent Parson School of Design grads Kate Lane, as copy editor--thanks to her background in both journalism and design, she'll help make us mind our p's and q's and Ben Helm who is manning our web site--watch for some exciting new things popping up there. Also joining us is Devon Spencer Smith, a sophomore in Parson's illustration program By the way, Kate and Parson's alum Kanako Shimura came up with the idea for this issue's cover logo--Kanako did the final artwork. We're grateful for their contributions.
