About The Record:

Nearer the Cross, by Tennessee Ernie Ford, is a singer-selected group of hymns. Tennessee Ernie, whose devoted and straightforward singing of hymns has long been a highlight of his nighttime television show, is accompanied in this recording by the orchestra and choir conducted by Harry Geller. The arrangements by Mr. Geller and Tennessee Ernie are interestingly but simply drawn in keeping with the tradition and significance of these great old songs, and are ideally suited to Ernie's frank and engaging baritone. And as always, Tennessee Ernie Ford displays the taste, reverence and enthusiasm which evoke the warmest possible response from his many, many listeners.(liner notes) Tennessee Ernie Ford's comments about this record: "I feel privileged in bringing to you this album of Hymns. All the masses of Atomic and Hydrogen Energy, Missiles and Satellites and Rockets are but a puff of wind when compared to the power of these prayerful lyrics. I submit these great songs of faith to you in the hope that you attain the same enjoyment and uplift listening to them as I did in singing them. This is my sincere message to you."
