When receptionist Janet Blake (Debbie Reynolds) accepts a lift from a handsome up-and-coming actor, she finds herself fleeing from his company when the man expects her to repay him in a certain way. As she knocks on a stranger's door hoping for a good samaritan, she finds Preston 'Mitch' Mitchell (Jurgens), an actor-turned-horse-rancher who chivalrously lets her stay the night in his spare room. When Mitch offers Janet a job as his secretary, she gladly accepts, finding the older man's company very pleasing, but when Mitch's on-off girlfriend Nita (Alexis Smith) returns, she is adamant that Mitch should get back on the stage where he belongs.
