How does a cold develop?
The mucous membranes of the nasopharynx and bronchi serve primarily to protect against inhaled foreign bodies and pathogens. The body gets rid of viruses and bacteria through sneezing and coughing. Substances produced by the nasal mucous membranes also fend off the intruders. Constant strain in the cold and wet season, exhaustion or stress encourage the accumulation of viruses or bacteria on the mucous membranes of the respiratory tract. Viruses usually trigger an inflammatory reaction (infection) of the nasal mucous membranes. A "change of level" in the form of spread to the lower respiratory tract is threatened. A simple cold can develop into sinusitis due to swelling of the mucous membranes and the resulting reduced drainage of mucus. Signs include an inflamed and blocked nose, runny nose, painful pressure in the head, difficulty swallowing or reduced hearing. Other symptoms of the disease often occur, such as fever, aching limbs or conjunctivitis of the eyes. Timely treatment can prevent the infection from spreading to the paranasal sinuses or lungs. It is also important to heal the acute inflammation consistently in order to prevent the development of chronic complaints.
