From Schrade Walden Cutlery Catalog printed in 1970 - possibly for the 1970 October/November Annual Sales Force, the description of the knife is:  NO. 171UH PRO HUNTER, Extra heavy high carbon cutlery steel. Solid Brass guard and rivets. Heavy genuine leather sheath and "piggyback" hone stone. Precise control. 9 1/2" overall, 5 1/4" blade

Per my Research and from the allaboutpocketknives dot com knife_forum: 
As to the birds head pommel and the flat pommel; the 1971 & 1972 shortline catalogs show pictures of the 171UH with the birds head pommel. Beginning in 1973 the 171UH is shown with the flat pommel cap.  
There were 2 production runs that can be seen in the catalogs:
1971-1983 (the first two years having the birds head pommel)
1990-1991 All of these are shown in the catalogs with the flat pommel cap.

Handle is made of: 
" STAGLON "( Acetal Resin Polymer )it was made by the DuPont Corporation for the Space Program and released for public use in 1967.Also Known as" DELRIN "
