This volume competes the publication, begun in 1973 with The Complete Albums, of all Goya’s known drawings and highlights the artist’s exceptional talent as a draughtsman.  Pierre Gassier has traced and identified more than a thousand drawings, in pencil, chalk or pen, including some now lost.  All of the known drawings -- excepting those which make up the Albums -- are reproduced here for the first time in one volume, and, the majority in their original size.  They fall into three categories:  the studies and sketches made in perparation for the engravings; studies for the paintings -- a much smaller number, as in this medium it was the custom of the time to execute preliminary studies direct with brush on canvas; and a larger group of individual drawings from different periods of the artist’s life.  The book not only contains a number of little-known masterpieces:  it also provides a unique documentation for the understanding of Goya’s creative processes.  Particularly in the studies for his great series of engravings -- Los Caprichos, for which 110 studies exist, Los Destastres de la Guerra, or Los Disparates -- it is possible to discover the artist’s rare sensibility to his subject, and to see the progress of his composition from the first realistic sketch to the final work of art.

-Book measures approximately 11¾” x 8½”, with 581 numbered pages.
