Commonly known as the jelly palm, Butia ordata features a stout, solitary trunk that can grow up to 8 to 10 meters (26 to 33 feet) tall and has a diameter of about 30 to 60 centimeters (12 to 24 inches). The trunk is topped with a crown of large, arching fronds that can reach lengths of up to 3 meters (10 feet). The fronds are pinnate and have a bluish-green color, creating a lush, tropical appearance.
Native to the grasslands and savannas of Brazil, Butia ordata thrives in warm, subtropical climates and prefers well-drained soils. It exhibits good drought resistance, making it suitable for xeriscaping and low-water gardens. The jelly palm can tolerate temperatures as low as -7°C (19°F) and is relatively wind-resistant, allowing it to adapt to various landscapes. Its edible fruit, which resembles small jelly-like berries, adds to its appeal, making it a popular choice for ornamental planting in gardens and landscapes, particularly in warmer regions.
