"Here's an excellent disc that I've been totally hooked on for the past few weeks. [Dura Mater] play a highly energized brand of prog fusion that takes cues from luminaries like ... Brand X, Mahavishnu Orchestra and King Crimson but really don't imitate any of them at all. Their sound is quite fresh and could even put them in the post rock / math rock genre along with bands like Dysrythmia and Turing Machine. You'll just have to trust me on this. They're really good, ok?" -- progressiveears.net
CD #2
Artists: Dura Mater / Canaveral
Album: Split
Label: Post Replica
Catalog: PR-002
CD Release Date: 2003
Track Listing: 1. Dura Mater "My Guru Told Me To" - 2. Dura Mater "Yaw, You Want More Fuller" - 3. Dura Mater "Take the Horn Out Your Mouth" - 4. Canaveral "Pressure and Frequency" - 5. Canaveral "Perfection is a Cloud"
This is a split full-length from two of San Diego's instrumental power-trios of yesteryear. Dura Mater was heavily influenced by early 70's prog and fusion (think Magma, Mahavishnu Orchestra, early Tony Williams Lifetime and King Crimson) while Canaveral's sound combines echo-y indie rock and tight-knit math rock (think Don Caballero, Slint with a sprinkling of Radiohead). Dura Mater members went on to Astra, Silver Sunshine, Seesaw Ensemble and Spirit Photography. Canaveral members were later found in Sleeping People, Goblin Cock, Mr. Tube, Goodbye Blue Monday and The Deere Johns.
