Classic lot of 19 Celluloid Thimbles used as promotional advertising for the famed Robert Burns Howell Company of Portland Oregon. Red, Green, Tan, and Yellow printed with Howell's logo. Howell ran his Millinery, Craft, and Bridal Supply Company out of the Royal Building smack dab in the center of Portland during the first half of the 20th century and is considered to be a pioneer of fine tailoring in west.
It would be interesting to hear his take on what that area of Portland has sadly become today. Anyhoo, these thimbles are a reminder of days gone by for the finer dressed citizens of Puddle Town. They are from the estate of the owner of a local sewing machine shop.
Also included is a bonus silver thimble from the same lot promoting the Harrison Nursery in York, Nebraska.
Sometimes older is better.... well, let's make that almost always older is better. Oh nuts, let's just admit it: OLDER IS BETTER and that is why you are here, right? Who wouldn't prefer a 50 year old bottle of linseed oil to one off the shelf brand-spanking-new? Or,a box of partially used colored chalks from the 1940's? That is because you know that "they just don't make 'em like that anymore" is a great way to shop for things that are important to you and your process. There is a reason people snap up sewing machine needles made in the 60's and 70's while disdaining newer ones. It is as simple as this: Where were they made, Germany or China? And, so it goes for all kinds of stuff you crafters, artists, and creators love to work with. OLDER IS BETTER!
