Vintage Junior Olympic First Place Medal 880 Relay Mid Century

In the 1960's I was honored to be on a championship track team at Tigard High School (Tigard, Oregon) with many very talented individuals. Our sprinters were especially good and in combination we were nearly unbeatable in the 880 and 440 (yard) relay races. I was in the third position and handed to our anchor, Dave Durant, who was a state champion hurdler (but who could have won any event he wished to enter). The image of Davy's hand out to receive the last baton exchange and him accelerating into overdrive as he finished the circuit was a thing of joy.

We won this particular "gold" medal at the AAU Oregon State Championship Jr. Olympics held at Grant Park in Portland the summer of 1964. It was not until 1967 that the Jr. Olympics went national, but I am sure we would have smoked a lot of teams if we had had the opportunity. The medal is brass and is in fine condition; the ribbon shows age and wear.
