The easel picture, the kind of picture we are accustomed to hang in our homes, flourished in the 17th century, especially in Calvinistic Holland as we see with this splendid painting of two children playing with a doll that appears to be identified on the paper the boy is pointing to. The doll appears to have a crucifix on top its fitted hat? In many ways here is an example of the new secular style paintings that replaced the timeless dramas of Christian art, which had occupied painters in the past; and instead momentary glimpses of everyday life became the fashion. This delightful painting came from the collection of a lady who emigrated along with her husband from Belgium to the United States after World War 2. She was a gifted pianist, artist and entertainer in addition to being an Art collector throughout her long life.
This antique painting is on board with minimal even crazing. There is a signature of the artist of which I have been unable to identify? Though it is apparent they were a trained and gifted. The painting was professionally framed while the couple lived in Chicago during the 1960’s.
