Description
Exceedingly rare Mathematics (Writing Book) of Samuel Sherwood (April 24, 1779 – October 31, 1862) from the years 1814-1816. 84 hand-written back- to- back pages consisting of fourty two in a 7.5 x 12 inch on Gothic era string binding. Fascinating content throughout revealing an educated man sharpening his intellectual prowess expanding his knowledge on the world through math & reason. In one of his musings he writes: The salary of the President of the United States is twenty-five thousand dollars a year...what is that a day? Certainly the pay for the President James Madison during the time this manuscript was compiled was indeed $25,000.
Mr. Sherwood also notes that the national dept of England is 275 million pounds sterling...how long would it take to count the dept in sterling? His answer: Reackoning without intermission 12 hours a day at the rate of 50 dollars a minute and 365 days to the year in 94 years 134 days 5 hours and 20 minutes.
Another Musing titled "Rule of the Inverse" Feburary 2nd 1815: Suppose 650 men are in a Garrison and their provisions are calculated to the last but two months how many men must leave the Garrison that the same provisions may be sufficent for those who remain five months.
Just some of the titles include: Apothecaries Weights* Examples of Reduction of Federal Money* Reduction Ascending and Decending* Practical Questions* Example of Weights *Annuities etc...
