An extremely rare, original art nouveau chandelier by The Mitchell Vance Company out of NYC. The chandelier is signed twice on interior pieces with MVC and came out of a 1920 home in Greenville, SC. The chandelier was original to the home and was working until earlier this year when the home underwent rennovations by new owners. The home had various other Mitchell Vance lighting including pairs of matching sconces, listed separately. Mitchell Vance Company was one of the early pioneers in electric lighting, exhibiting at the Centennial Exposition is 1876. They were known for quality, detailed lighting and closed shop in 1933.
The chandelier is all original except for new period-correct cloth-covered wiring and part of the canopy plate (most of the canopy is original). The finish is silver plate and original with a 100+ year patina and finish loss consistent with age. The chandelier was hand waxed with a museum-grade micro wax and buffed to a satin finish for protection. The chandelier body is all brass and has heavy brass ornamentation. It would have had crystal prisms but these were removed at some point when they were no longer in style. You could add prisms easily enough if you wished.
