About the item:
In 1988, TSR teamed with DC Comics to produce comic books based on Gary Gygax's iconic roll playing game, Advanced Dungeons & Dragons. Ultimately, they produced an four series' of comics based on the worlds of TSR, launching first with Dragonlance (August) and then Advanced Dungeons & Dragons (September). Forgotten Realms followed in September of 1989 and Spelljammer the following year (September, 1990). The AD&D title lasted the longest, concluding with issue #36 in December of 1991.
DC published one stand-alone issue, TSR Worlds Annual #1, that hit newsstands on July 19 in 1990 and featured the first comic appearance of Spelljammer (two months before the Spelljammer series itself launched). Introduced into the gaming community the year before, it was the first of a host of new campaign settings published by TSR in 1989. Created by Jeff Grubb, Spelljmmer was, essentially, 'fantasy' space adventure instead of "sci-fi" space adventures. Most importantly, it "introduced a universe of magical starships traversing the 'crystal spheres' that contained all the earthbound AD&D campaign worlds." Spelljammer allowed these worlds to be connected together for the first time, introducing new 'Jules Verne-esque' technology. Ultimately, Spelljammer allowed every single D&D fantasy world to connect with each other and was thus one of the first true crossovers in RPG history (think 'multiverse' for gaming).
