Long-Leaf Pine
Pinus Palustris
Long Leaf Pine Trees are very fast growing once started.
Mature trees reach 90-120 ft tall, but I swear some of ours are bigger!
It is said that the Long Leaf Pine can live to be 500 years old.
The thick bark makes these trees very tolerant to fire.
The Red-Cockaded Woodpecker is dependent on the mature Long Leaf pine forests.
We often see the Woodpeckers climbing up the bark.
Seeds are eaten by many birds and other wildlife.
We found a few seeds being carried across the yard by ants!
Pine Resin is typically collected from the Long Leaf and other types of Pines.
We collected resin from a few after Hurricane Michael scarred them.
