Antique Corn Seed Planter, Rustic Primitive Tool, Steampunk Automation

Here is a very nice antique farm implement from the mid to late 1800's: an automatic corn seed planter. Before the 1850s farmers carried a sack of seed corn on their shoulder and used a stick to poke a hole in the soil where they then dropped seed. Hand-held planters came into common use during that time and enabled the farmer to plant his field without bending over to plant each seed. These tools evolved rapidly during the following 60-year period before large mechanical planters became commonplace. This model is a relatively simple version with a seed hopper and a levered snout operating in coordination through the farmer's opening and closing of the wooden staves. 34" long, 10" turned wood handles, iron hardware. Good and rusty, a true primitive relic that's right up the steampunk's alley. Excellent for garden art, farmhouse decor, man cave, or maybe you'd like to give it a try in your garden!

SEED PLANTER

Portland Pandemonium's Garden Roots

When we started Portland Pandemonium we needed things to fill up our store so we simply walked around our yard and garden and started "picking" stuff right where we lived!  We had big collections of outdoor items including bird houses, thermometers, metal signs, gee-gaws, tin containers, old garden tools, and a ton of decorative items here and there and everywhere around the place and it was these objects that helped make up our initial shop's inventory. Plus, this turned out to be the beginning of our age-related "downsizing" soon to come!

Today this kind of yard & garden stuff continues to be a staple for us and we are always looking for things that might find their best use by being stuck somewhere in a yard or garden. And, of course, the odder and quirkier the better. So, come take a little stroll around our garden with us, but be sure to keep both your eyes and your mind open!
