1951 Dick & Jane Primer: "We Work and We Play" The All-American Nuclear Family

Vintage Dick & Jane "We Work and We Play" Reading Pre-Primer, 1951 Portland Public School. Featuring the all-American nuclear family at home doing various chores, activities, and projects. Work Dick, Work! Lovely watercolor illustrations of mid century family life. Published by Scott Foresman Company as "The New We Work and We Play," this is the second book in their "pre-primer" series. This edition introduces 21 new words ("mother" "father" "blue" "yellow" "little" "big" etc) to the reader for a total of 38 words in its overall vocabulary. 64 pages in a 8" X 6" soft cover. The cover does show considerable shelf wear and some of the early pages have "thumb wear" at the bottom corner, but overall it is in pretty good condition with the text and pictures all clean, clear, and vibrant. No stray marks, tears, or odors.

In grade school this was book and its associated drills was either an exciting thing to behold, or absolute drudgery. For me, it was simply a competition: my goal (and innate gift) even at that early age, was speed reading and I always got to be in the most advanced reading group ("jets" "rockets" "racers" etc) on that factor alone, regardless of my sloppy comprehension, which was just okay. So. Read On Dick, Read On!

Portland Pandemoniumers Love to Read

And the Quirkier, the Better

Mostly what you will find in our Book Nook Section are some of the Odd-Ball things that got published, regardless of their Quirkiness. Among these goodies you will usually find old family Bibles, High School & College Yearbooks, Oddly Illustrated Impudent Children's Books, Quaint Humorists, Instruction Manuals, Text Books, Funky Magazines, Comics, Sheet Music, Diaries, Logs, Schoolbooks, Encyclopedias, Dictionaries, Cookbooks, Catalogs, and such....

Of course, one of the great things about books is that they can transport you to whole new worlds you have never dreamed of where elephants hurry to catch the train, fairies appear when most needed, spells are cast, white knights come to your rescue, your aunt is on the cover, cats wear hats, scissors talk, and one pill makes you smaller......

We aways have an eclectic selection that is constantly changing, but not too much of any one thing. So, pull your chair up, have a cuppa, and do a little browsing in our Book Nook Section:
