Harper's "Young People" Magazine, 1890 Annual, Stories, Poems, Puzzles, Cartoons

Antiquarian Harper's "Young People" Magazine, 1890 Annual, Stories, Poems, Puzzles, Cartoons, Etchings, Letters, Advice For Boys & Girls. Includes all weekly issues from November 5, 1989 to October 28, 1890, Numbers 523-74. Leather bound 8.5" X 11.5" encompassing 892 pages. "Young People" magazine was published as part of the larger Harper Bros. domain along with their established Magazine, Weekly, and Bazaar magazines. As such, it was able to draw on the considerable talent and resources of those publications resulting in a very well produced and received weekly in its own right. Its life paralleled the rise and fall of the Victorian era (1879-99) and its editorship, sensibility, and politics were thus informed. This tome is chock full of absolutely fascinating snapshots of the times featuring short stories and serials, essays, poetry, puzzles, games, cartoons, etchings, drawings, sheet music, and (my favorite) the "postal box" which was stuffed full of letters to the editor. Includes a complete index to the illustrations, general articles, and authors. Each issue originally sold for "5 Cents"

NOTE: This volume is distressed.  The binding has detached (I can repair at your request) and there are a few loose pages along with it. The cover shows some shelf wear, and there is the expected age-fading throughout. Otherwise, in good readable condition with especially well preserved etchings and drawings.

Portland Pandemoniumers Love to Read

And the Quirkier, the Better

Mostly what you will find in our Book Nook Section are some of the Odd-Ball things that got published, regardless of their Quirkiness. Among these goodies you will usually find old family Bibles, High School & College Yearbooks, Oddly Illustrated Impudent Children's Books, Quaint Humorists, Instruction Manuals, Text Books, Funky Magazines, Comics, Sheet Music, Diaries, Logs, Schoolbooks, Encyclopedias, Dictionaries, Cookbooks, Catalogs, and such....

Of course, one of the great things about books is that they can transport you to whole new worlds you have never dreamed of where elephants hurry to catch the train, fairies appear when most needed, spells are cast, white knights come to your rescue, your aunt is on the cover, cats wear hats, scissors talk, and one pill makes you smaller......

We aways have an eclectic selection that is constantly changing, but not too much of any one thing. So, pull your chair up, have a cuppa, and do a little browsing in our Book Nook Section:
