This is a truly extraordinary piece of indigenous folk art imported from Tonala, Mexico. It’s a mind-blowing Tastoane mask worn during the revered ceremonial fight that takes place every July 25th. The mask is made from leather and has three-dimensional adornments of a snake, scorpion and nagual. The painting and detail are phenomenal with intricate petatillo work and the mask is substantial with a mass of black and white hair made from local fiber. Protruding bull horns complete the look. Tastoanes represent the original tribal peoples who hid in local caves( thus the spiders/snakes/reptiles) as the Spaniards approached. The yearly ritual battle re-enacts the introduction of Spaniards and Christianity into this area of Mexico. This mask measures approximately 19”in height, 14” in width by 12” in depth and the hair hangs over 3 ‘. Economy shipping in the U.S. will be $50.00, as this piece is huge.
