Martin Cooper working for Motorola in the 1960’s eventually developed the first truly portable mobile/cellular phone in 1973. Made the first call to his competitors Bell Labs from 6th Avenue in NYC.
This was the beginning of a technology which changed our culture globally and social media forever. It was not until 1983/84 Sept. that The FCC AND IEEE approved the phone for the public domain.
It used the 800 AMPS (advanced mobile phone system). And was first offered in the DC and Chicago area by AMERITECH/ cellular one and others under the Bell umbrella. The carrier was known as DYNATAC. (Dynamic adaptive total area coverage)
The phones were 2.5lbs and a foot long, nicknamed, “THE BRICK”, cost retail $4,000 ($12,000 today) and 42 cents/minute ($1.25) today.
