This is an outstanding piece of indigenous folk art imported from Tonala, Mexico. It’s an extraordinary Tastoane mask worn during the revered ceremonial fight that takes place every July 25th. The mask is made from leather and has three-dimensional adornments. The painting and detail are phenomenal and the mask is substantial with a mass of hair made from horse tails. Tastoanes represent the original tribal peoples who hid in local caves( thus the spiders/snakes/reptiles) as the Spaniards approached. The yearly ritual battle re-enacts the introduction of Spaniards and Christianity into this area of Mexico. This mask measures approximately 12” in height, width and depth and the hair hangs approximately 30”. The mask is signed by the artist and dancer. Economy shipping in the U.S. will be $40.00.
