Homer painted this seascape in 1873. Titled, A Basket of Clams, it shows two young boys walking back to shore carrying a heavy basket of freshly-caught clams.
Born in Boston, U.S.A. in February 1836, Winslow Homer became a well-known American landscape painter and illustrator. His mother was also a successful artist and encouraged his work. At first, he developed a career as a commercial illustrator before moving into oil painting, and he loved sketching seascapes and creating marine landscapes.
Homer died September 1910 in Maine, U.S.A.
