is the subject of this 1947 Rosenthal Christmas Plate, the 38th plate in Rosenthal Christmas series which was started in 1910 and is one of the most beautiful and highest quality Christmas series ever produced. Inscription: WEIHNACHTEN (Christmas) 1947. Blue underglaze design on white porcelain, diameter 8.5 inches (21.5 cm), designed by Louis Hagen. Correct 1947 mark for the Selb Art Department of Rosenthal, located in Bavaria, Germany. Pierced foot for hanging wire.
This is the RAREST plate in the series -- none now ; none sold in the last 3 months. MUCH more scarce than the 1910 First Edition, which had FIVE listed for sale when I posted this rare 1947.
The Litany of the Blessed Virgin Mary, also known as the Litany of Loreto, was first used at the Shrine of Our Lady of Loreto (Italy). The most ancient printed copy known to exist is that of Dillingen in Bavaria, Germany, dating from 1558; it is fairly certain that this is a copy of an earlier text. The litany contains many of the titles used for the Virgin Mary and would often be recited as a question and response. Many classical composers, including Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, have set this litany to music.
EXCELLENT CONDITION (no chips, cracks, or repairs), and FIRST QUALITY(no scratch through the trademark). Light spots are from glare in the photo, not scratches or defects in the plate.
