In a word; Pure.
Zevo Golf’s clubs were known for their distance but the company’s marketing came up short.
Outgunned by bigger companies with much bigger advertising budgets, the Temecula, CA maker of golf clubs, drivers and accessories found itself in the rough before it was sold late last month (2003) to Texas-based retailer Golfsmith International Inc. for an undisclosed amount.
Zevo Golf had been a pillar of the golf equipment industry, most notably in the area of the research and design of affordable, progressive golf clubs.
Before they were bought out, Zevo was making serious high end irons - a golf club boutique, if you will.
The Hoffee family purchased Zevo Golf in 1996 and moved the small company from Vista to Temecula as a way for the family to indulge their passion for golf.
Initially, they focused on custom fit clubs, but its owners wanted to pursue a larger market. After several years of development, Zevo created its Flying Buttress line of irons and its Compressor titanium driver.
While the clubs performed well, Zevo struggled to get brand name recognition, said Steve Donahue, equipment editor for Golf World Business, a weekly trade magazine.
“It’s amazing they held on this long,” Donahue said by phone. “They didnt have the marketing push,” and was unable to spend enough to gain a professional player’s endorsement.
Timing also hurt the company.
ust as it was rolling out its Compressor clubs last year, Zevo became embroiled with the United States Golf Association over approving the size of the clubs and Zevo’s performance-enhancing technology. Eventually the association approved the clubs, said Hoffee, but the battle hurt the advertising campaign.
At roughly the same time, Nike introduced its line of clubs, backed by the game’s top player, Tiger Woods.
“We were holding our own but it was a definite struggle,” Hoffee said. At the time of the sale the company had only a few employees left.
Golfsmith approached the Hoffees earlier this year but it took months to finalize a deal because of the number of patents that had to be transferred, Hoffee said.
During the past year when the unstable economy has many manufacturers struggling, Goldsmith has been acquiring golf equipment makers to broaden its product line, Donahue said. The company carries Callaway, Ping and Nike, but also markets its own line of golf equipment developed by companies it has purchased, such as Lynx.

Review: Of other Zevo Clubs, "I traded in my old Lynx irons for a new set of Zevos about 9 months ago. I have always played very well my irons with the exceptions of my 3 & 4 irons, like any golfers. The Zevos have really helped my game a lot, I wont go so far as to say that they have been a miracle cure for my game but they help a lot. All the irons seem to give a slightly higher trajectory than I am used to and the is after a club fitting even. Even with the higher trajectory I have picked up about 12 yards in distance with each club, I this this is due to the lower swing weight letting me swing slightly faster. The clubs have a great look to them, very high tech. They feel great through my swing and through impact. The flying buttress design really does dampen the vibration quite a bit. Overall I would say these clubs are a great value for their price. I feel that are comparable to clubs that cost much more. I have owned Callaways, Pings, Lynx, Taylor Made and Titleist, and with the exception of my BeCu pings these are probably my favorite irons. They just feel good to play with. They inspire confidence at address. And most of all they are predictable when it comes to shot making. The bottom line for me is I know I can count on these irons."
