Orchestral Potpourri, by Rossini, Smetana, Nicolai, Schubert, is a collection of works from four different composers: Gioachino Rossini, Bedrich Smetana, Carl Nicolai, and Franz Schubert performed by Rostov Festival Orchestra and directed by Stanislav Klinsky. Rossini's Barber of Seville is considered to be one of the greatest masterpieces of comedy within music, and has been described as the opera buffa of all "opere buffe". After two hundred years, it remains a popular work. The Bartered Bride is a comic opera in three acts by Smetana, to a libretto by Karel Sabina. The work is generally regarded as a major contribution towards the development of Czech music. The Merry Wives of Windsor, is an 1849 opera in three acts by Nicolai to a German libretto by Salomon Hermann Mosenthal based on Shakespeare's play. It remains popular in Germany and Austria and its overture is sometimes heard in concert in other countries. Rosamunde is a play by Helmina von Chezy, which is primarily remembered for the incidental music which Schubert composed for it. Schubert's incidental music is scored for orchestra, and for some of the numbers diverse combinations of singers.
