HORACE McCOY is best known for his 1935 novel THEY SHOOT HORSES, DON'T THEY? (which was filmed in 1969, featuring JANE FONDA & MICHAEL SARRAZIN & SUSANNAH YORK & GIG YOUNG), a noir masterpiece about the desperate lives of a group of poverty-ridden individuals, trapped in a do-or-die dance marathon.  In 1948, he wrote the hard-boiled masterpiece KISS TOMORROW GOODBYE, which was released as a film in 1950, featuring JAMES CAGNEY & BARBARA PAYTON as the sadomasochistic team of lovers and criminals.  SCALPEL was McCoy's last completed novel about a young doctor raised in the coal fields of Pennsylvania, who becomes torn between the "easy riches" of becoming a "society doctor" for the very wealthy, or treating the poor folks among whom he was originally raised.  The doctor must also choose between his rich, attractive society "matron", or the loving and devoted nurse who attempts to keep the poor healthy in his old home town.  The book was released as a film in 1953, under the title "BAD FOR EACH OTHER," featuring CHARLTON HESTON, LIZABETH SCOTT and DIANE FOSTER.
