This gorgeous Iris (Heirloom Iris Purple / Eco easter fringed iris) or Japanese Iris Japonica is one of the most beautiful blooms of spring and comes from an unusual member of the Iris family - the walking Iris. It produces abundant sprays of absolutely beautiful and dainty lavender-blue flowers with a yellow throat and purple markings on the fringed petals. Unlike other Iris, the blooming lasts much longer. It is an easy-to-grow evergreen Iris, plants grow to maybe 15 inches tall and spread by underground rhizome and runners to form a dense patch of attractive foliage consisting of strap-like green leaves. Thus the name walking iris. Truly beautiful.
I will send you 4 well-rooted Iris plants ( rhizome) without soil. Please plant them as soon as possible after arrival. To plant, dig shallow holes 10" across and 2-4" deep, make a ridge of soil down the middle of each hole, dividing it in half. Place the iris rhizome on the ridge, spreading the roots to both sides, cover with soil, and firm with your hands. In clay soil, the top of the rhizome should be slightly to half exposed. It can be covered with 1" of soil maximum in sandy soil. Water thoroughly.
This unique variety of Iris has a long lifespan and produces longer-lasting flowers than most other types, making it an excellent choice for cut flowers and a fine addition to Asian theme gardens, butterfly gardens, cottage gardens, perennial gardens, rock gardens, and blue theme gardens. It is also easy to grow, and its vigorous growth helps to block weed growth.
They are easy to grow in almost any moist but well-drained soil of average fertility and shade to dappled shade. The morning sun is okay. They don't mind poor soils but will not grow in salty soils. Once established, they tolerate dry soil conditions but do best in moist soil. Long-lived and the maintenance is minimal. Plant once, enjoy years!
