Odyssey White Hot V-Line Pro Double Bend Putter - 34"

Review: "Haven't seen much buzz for this so I thought I'd share. I had a Golfsmith gift card to burn and have always wanted to try a putter with more alignment aids, but that wasn't overly complicated looking. These thoughts are over several visits to various stores over the winter. I'll put this out now and get over with it: the Versa line didn't work for me. The color scheme does not make a difference for my alignment, all the heads felt too light, and the grip used on those is awful. I tried all the heads and lengths I could but never got comfortable with any of them. I tried the White Hot Pro #7, which felt nice and stable and framed the ball really nice, but for some reason I always felt like it was fighting my stroke. I somehow made almost every short putt I tried with the #7, but it just didn't feel right oddly enough. I have a slight arc with a little forward shaft lean, per the iPing app, and typically use an Odyssey ProType 7 (White Hot 330M shape), after switching from SC Del Mars and JATs. It could be that the face balanced putter didn't work, but as soon as I picked up the V-Line, it looked right and felt right and I was making putts all over the store. It didn't fight my stroke, nor did I have to fiddle with it to line it up or make it sit right. Again, I was making putts from like the used club racks and clothing section. Yes, really scientific testing here.

I also really liked the SC GoLo, finish and feel were amazing, just as easy to line up, but could not justify paying almost three times more. Another putter that caught my eye was the Ping TR Shea, and IMO the TR insert felt surprisingly good, maybe even better than the WHP insert, but it was too similar to my PT7, so I decided against it.

Like my 3Deep thread, this will be an ongoing review, and here are some initial impressions of the V-Line from my mini-golf style testing in the store and on my putting mat.

  1. The V-Line finish is nice. Not sure how durable it is, but it's a classy looking tone and has a nice metallic look to it. An improvement from the older, rougher, more painted Odyssey look, if anyone knows what I'm talking about. Very nice grip with soft textured feel, but not spongy. I typically don't like paddle grips with that thinner rib under the last three fingers (I think this is a Lamkin Crossline Paddle?), but it is pretty nice. Still contemplating regripping to the ProType Lamkin 3Gen Pistol that I love so much. The cover is nice, but even brand new it seems a little soft and worn.
  2. At address, the V-Line sits perfectly square and frames the ball easily and in a way that is confidence inspiring. I don't like busy alignment aids, but didn't mind the multiple lines. The "V" shape of the flange/tail helps with alignment too. Even though I typically have my hands slightly ahead of the ball, the way this sits brings my hands back a touch, almost neutral with the ball, which was fine. Not sure if that's a positive or negative for some.
  3. Head weight and weighting feels great for my stroke, even though I typically don't use a face balanced putter. It feels nice and heavy and just wants to stay on path with no urge to deviate and with no need to guide it unnecessarily. To use the old cliché, you can definitely "let the club do the work".
  4. Insert feels nice and soft like the old WHXG, but not mushy (subjective). I have been putting at home on the mat a lot with Hex Blacks, Srixon XVs, and TM TP Reds. When hit putts off center you can feel the clickier feedback. No feel for real world distance control yet."
