Here is a matching set of OEM Grilles & Brass Logos, removed from an early and late version, model AR-2aX loudspeaker. Most dimensions are identical except for the top half of grille where the cut-outs are slightly different. Even with variation of top cutout, I believe either grille would cover the baffle and front of raw speakers, whether an early version 2aX (s/n < 125,000) or late version 2aX (s/n = or > 125,000).  I welcome any info that might contradict this assumption from any AR knowledgeable audiophiles?

References to grilles are as they are shown in pics (e.g. left side, right side).  The grille on right had the lighter colored masonite frame repaired.

Overall grill dimensions:  22.25"H x 11 & 15/16"W

Dimensions of BOTH round lower woofer cutouts: 10"

Dimensions of top cutout for left grille with darker frame: 8.75"H x 10 & 3/8"W

Dimensions of top cutout for right grille with lighter colored frame:  7 & 15/16"H x 11 & 1/16"W

Dimensions of real brass Badges/Logos: 1"H x 2 & 1/16"W (possibly 2 & 1/32")

The main repair/restoration was mending the fractured thin side parts for the lighter colored frame's TOP cut-out.  This is a very common problem with these grilles since the left & right sides of the TOP cutout are so narrow, and the grille frame cannot withstand much bending or pressure, before the narrow top edges "snap". In this case the narrow sides only had partial breaks.  I was able to mend and reinforce by applying wood glue between the 2 breaks, then also gluing a "wood splint" to the back side of each break and let those glued breaks and added splints dry hard overnight.  The top cutout narrow sides now feel much more stable and secure, but should ABSOLUTELY be handled super gently... They are still somewhat vulnerable due to the poor manufacture design.  I used Aleene's Tacky Glue for all applications, including...reattaching the frayed grille fabric back to the frame.

The new owner MUST handle these 50+ yr old grilles with the utmost care.  I will leave it up to the new owner to decide how they prefer to re-install the logos to the grilles and the grilles to the speaker cabinets.  I will suggest 2 methods that might prove helpful?  I have collected and restored vintage audio for 40+ years, esp speakers.  I am very familiar with most vintage models of AR speakers!

One grille has a few pieces of residual glue still attached to 3 back-side corners... from where original grilles were hard-glued onto baffles.  I am leaving those alone for new owner to either carefully remove or leave alone.  I would leave it alone in fear or accidentally tearing away grille fabric.

I've seen some AR-2aX grilles that could be re-installed on the front baffle of speaker by simple friction.. once grille was set back in the recessed area of front. OR... some small pieces of velcro could be gently applied to the back sides of grilles and fronts of baffles...as long as grille could still removed without damaging the back side of grille (i.e. pulling the old, frail fabric loose).   OR (and my preference) Use 4 very small braids to tack the 4 corners of each grille partially into the front baffle of speaker cab's.  This way, the braids can gently be pulled out to remove the grilles should future maintenance be needed for any drivers or the crossovers.

Will be well packed for a safe delivery.
