From November to March, We ship these plants in their dormant state. This means they will have no leaves. The stem will be strewn with buds for this coming spring's growth. If you live in a southern state, these will push new growth upon planting them as dormancy is dependent on hours of daylight and temperature. We are located in PA State and temperatures can differ drastically around the country.
Box elder tree is a fast-growing tree that lives up to sixty years with mature growth up to 50-80 feet. It is famous as a shade tree in landscaping. Native to North America, the hardiest growing zones are 2-10 with plenty of sunlight.
There are many famous names, including ash-leaved maple and maple ash. It is the only member of the maple family to have compound leaves with three to seven leaflets. The maple name was derived from its white wood, similar to boxwood, and its leaf formation reminds one of an elder tree.

Seeds Germination:
Plant the seeds about three-quarters of an inch (2 cm.) deep in moist peat moss or folder the paper towel, then place them in a plastic bag inside the refrigerator for 60 to 90 days. Place the pots in a warm location when they come out of the refrigerator, and once they germinate, place them in a sunny window. Keep the soil moist at all times
Stratification is achieved either by sowing maple seeds outdoors in the fall in temperate or cold regions or by refrigerating the maple in an appropriate medium. Placing the seeds and moist, but not wet, peat moss, sand, perlite or vermiculite in a bag or container with a small opening or holes to allow slight air flow and re-moistening the medium as needed to prevent drying is key to maintaining the stratification environment.
The ideal length and temperature for stratification varies between maple species, but most germinate best following 40 to 90 days of cold treatment at 33 to 41 degrees Fahrenheit. When several of the seeds begin to sprout, they are ready to plant.
