ON THE COVER: Uber-rebuilder Ty Pennington, photographed on February 22 by Michael Edwards. Here and on pages 12 to 17: Grooming by Alejandra for artistsbytimothypriano.com.

FEATURES:
GOING TO EXTREMES: Ty Pennington and his Extreme Makeover: Home Edition crew head south to take on their biggest job yet: rebuilding as many storm-torn lives as their hammers and hearts can handle. As told to Steven Russell. Photographs by Michael Edwards.

GORDON PARKS: HIS PICTURES, HIS LEGACY: The recently deceased filmmaker and great LIFE photographer was a crusader vtrith a camera—and a trailblazer all his life. A celebration of the man and his art.

PICTURE OF THE WEEK: They look so calm, hut in fact, these two giant pandas are caught in the middle of a heated controversy. At any minute, the Taiwanese government will decide whether to accept China's offering of the cuddly couple (the female is at left; her gentleman friend, at right). Many Taiwanese want the pandas but remain wary of the mainland, which claims sovereignty over the island, so there's no telling what the decision will be. Meantime, these political bedfellows chill at the Wolong Giant Panda Protection and Research Center in China's Sichuan province, eating fresh bamboo and listening as their keepers sing to them in Taiwanese.

DEPARTMENTS:
Weekend Life: The season's sportiest new sneakers; your battle plan for beating spring allergies.
Plus: The five secrets of a perfect lawn.
Office Visits: Some of the wackiest ways people spend their 9-to-5 22 Picture Puzzle: What with all the changes, everyone's in a flutter.
