THIS WEEK our cover picture depicts the heroic Danish tenor, Lauritz Melchior, who sings his first Lohengrin of the season next Saturday afternoon, displaying his fine collection of Copenhagen porcelains to his colleague, Helen Traubel who will be the Elsa on January 25. In answer to the defense of opera in English, presented by Thomas and Ruth Martin last week, we offer an essay by Ferdinando D. Maurino, instructor in classical and romance languages at the Triple Cities College of Syracuse University. The illustrations to Dr. Joseph Braunstein's article represent the original costume sketches made by Ferdinand Heine for the premiere of Lohengrin at Weimar and the scenes first used at Munich.
