THIS WEEK: our cover picture suggests the lutes of the troubadours, as played by Manrico and his colleagues and as described by Mr. and Mrs. Matz in their article on mediaeval music. The background repeats the theme of the Trovatore scene one curtain, symbolic of the brutal struggle between Aragon and Castille. We are glad to offer an analysis of Verdi's popular score by Boris Goldovsky, who based his broadcast script of December 27, 1947 on this material. We print his remarks for the first time, with the permission of The Texas Company, sponsors of the broadcast. Our introduction of Roberta Peters, who made history with her Metropolitan debut on November 17 when she replaced Nadine Conner at five hours' notice as Zerlina, will be especially interesting to the Guild's student audience, which will hear the young soprano sing her first Metropolitan Queen of the Night on January 12. Every Guild member feels a deep interest in all that concerns Metropolitan Opera. OPERA NEWS has recently been honored with the confidence of the officers of the Opera Association who have asked us to publish the essential facts and figures which relate to the approaching campaign. We know that they will be read with sympathy and a sense of cooperation.
