John Stuart Skinner (1788 – 1851) was an American lawyer, publisher, and editor. Skinner founded the American Farmer magazine in 1819, selling the company to establish another periodical after the magazine became the first prominent Agricultural magazine in the United States. Skinner's periodical was warmly accepted by Thomas Jefferson, Andrew Jackson, and Timothy Pickering. In 1829 Skinner published the first American Turf Register and Sporting Magazine followed by a third periodical in 1845 and a fourth in 1849 which he edited until his death. Skinner is also noted for being the first to publish Francis Scott Key’s poem, The Star Spangled Banner. Besides his magazine Skinner was postmaster of Baltimore 1816-1849, became known as Maryland’s “Paul Revere”, was one time chief of agricultural bureau of the United States Patent and Trademark Office. Also in 1824 when General Lafayette was presented a 20,000 acre Congressional Land Grant, he selected Skinner as managing agent
