Additional Information
Pictured here in one of the most iconic moments in his illustrious career, Rocky Marciano remains one of the most recognizable figures in American sporting history as a heavyweight boxer who helped redefine the sport during one of the most transformative times in the history of the United States.Marciano is considered one of the greatest boxers ever to fight and was known for his relentless style, strength, stamina, and resilience, making him one of the most revered fighters of his era. This photograph captures the moment Marciano would capture the world's heavyweight title by knocking out then-champion Joe Walcott in the thirteenth round of their first match.
Marciano and Wolcott would fight again the following year in Marciano's title defense, when he would defeat Wolcott again to preserve his title as world heavyweight champion. Marciano would retain his title during every match where his challengers attempted to become world champions and remain the only boxer to attain this level of success. Rocky also holds the longest undefeated streak of any American heavyweight champion and is the only world heavyweight to go undefeated throughout his entire career. Marciano holds forty-nine professional wins and is still one of the most significant fighters ever to enter the ring.
This photograph's distinctive aesthetic captures the moment Marciano would achieve his first title and immediately transports the viewer back in time, linking the past and the present with a single image that remains a historic piece of the history of pugilism.
