SPRUCE GOOSE is the nickname for Howard Hughes' HUGHES H-4 HERCULES aircraft.  It was made of birch and spruce - hence the nickname.  Its wingspan was bigger than a football field, 320 feet, and it could carry more than 700 men and equipment.  Although it only flew one time, it, and Howard Hughes, have a very interesting history.   Concerns a time around WW II -- worth googling & the read.
