This listing is for the original paper campaign ticket shown."1880 Campaign Ticket for U. S. House of Representatives -  New Hampshire -  Ossian Ray (to fill position due to a death)."

This wonderful, illustrated "1880 Campaign Ticket" measures approx. 4-3/8" X4." At the top of the ticket is a classically designed illustration including all types of symbolic elements: a bald eagle holding a ribbon in it's beak.   Upon the ribbon is states, "E Pluribus Unum."  The eagle is perched on a shield with a big "R" on it (for Republican?), flanked by American Flags, and another ribbon states  "Republican Ticket 3d Cong'al District."  Below that it simply states:

For Representative in Congress, to Fill the vacancy in the 46th Congress,

OSSIAN RAY.

For Representative in the 47th Congress,

OSSIAN RAY.

Ossian Ray was a very active and accomplished politician from New Hampshire.  Two months before the end of his term in the US congress, Evarts W. Farr passed away.  The seat was vacant vacant and needed to be filled.  History doesn't tell us who else ran for this position from New Hampshire, but it does tell us that it was Ossian Ray, the Republican, who won the position.  This ticket served not only to allowed him to fill the vacancy for the two months remaining in the 46th Congress, but it also elected him to the 47th Congress. In addition to that he also ran, won and served the term for the 48 Congress. So in all he served for for four years and two months.

A little bit of history: Ossian Ray was born in Vermont in 1835 and went to school there, but later he went to law school in Lancaster New Hampshire and decided to remain in that place and practice law in the surrounding counties.   He was quite active in politics throughout his adult life. He was the county solicitor for Coos county from 1862 to 1872, a member of the N.H. state house of representatives in 1868 and 1969. He was a delegate to the national Republican convention in 1872. And he was the United States attorney for the district of New Hampshire from 1879 to 1880.
