Airplane Tow Aviation History Paperback Book by Tom Page 1961
(America Soaring Handbook #4)
LAUNCHING BY AIRPLANE TOW
Towing a sailplane into the air with a powered airplane is the safest method of launching and offers the best opportunities for soaring flight.
The structural loads on the sailplane are lighter than in any method of ground tow; the flight attitudes are normal and hence easier for a new pilot; and the emergency alternatives are more numerous than with auto or winch launch.
Air tow is convenient and fast to use, requiring less work and a smaller ground crew than any other launching method, and may be used at certain airports where local traffic makes winch or car launching impractical.
In air tow the altitude obtained is limited only by the power of the towplane and it is possible to search for and identify lift with more consistent success than with any other type of launch.
In addition the air tow method provides the easiest way to get into a high standing wave.
