The Grave Maker's House by Rubin Weber from Harper and Row Hardcover Book 1964

There was almost no one in the small Pennsylvania Dutch community who wasn't scared of Phares Zercher's loutish temper and his enormous strength. Suzie Kulp, who made love with Phares in the basement of the local church, was one of the few people who didn't seem frightened of Phares, although if Suzie hadn't been so stupid, she wouldn't have kept nagging at Phares about his not having a house of his own, one she could share with him.

Certainly young Kenneth, Phares' son, was terrified of his brutal father, and only old Jonah seemed to stand between the boy and the brute.

And then old Jonah died—suddenly. And was quite quickly buried. No one wanted or, perhaps, dared to question the manner of Jonah's dying. "

No one except Galen Herr, the local schoolteacher. Galen began to ask the questions no one else dared to ask. But because everyone else was so frightened it was hard for Galen to get honest answers from the doctor, from the undertaker-or even from the sheriff.

Yet he went on asking, until it was no longer safe—for his pregnant wife, for himself.

Book is in good condition. Some light shelf wear, some corner/edge wear on front and back cover. Previous owner signed their name on the first blank page. A few marks on front and back cover, and the 1st blank page. Small scrape on spine where I presume a sticker used to be. A solid reading copy. Please see photos for details, and let me know if you have any questions.
