New Alban Berg Lulu Opera Barcelona Teatre del Liceu 2 DVD Set 2011 Patricia Petibon Region Free

Berg's monumental opera, which he left unfinished when he died in 1935, had its posthumous premiere in its incomplete version in 1937, with the three-act version that has become standard premiering in 1979.  The opera tells the tragic story of a young woman who, as a victim of a harsh society, torments a series of men by whom she is objectified, desired, abused, and eventually killed.  Patricia Petibon, Franz Grundheber, and Julia Juon star in this 2010 Gran Teatre Del Liceu, Barcelona production of the Berg opera conducted by Michael Boder and directed by Olivier Py.  The production is very arresting visually, with imaginatively colored and detailed sets that give off a seedy, yet sometimes dark, atmosphere so ideal for "Lulu", splendidly lurid lighting, eye catching costumes (especially Lulu's) and video directing that's very natural, high in invention, and zooms in on the very eventful action to quite dazzling effect.

Alban Berg's opera "Lulu" is the story of a lower-class girl who sleeps her way to fame and fortune before losing everything she has and finding death at the hands of Jack the Ripper.  Conductor Michael Boder supports the two main protagonists, Patricia Petibon's Lulu and Ashley Holland's Dr. Schon, with the rich sonorities of Berg's music.  Recorded in High Definition and true surround sound.  Warning:  Contains scenes of nudity and violence.
