Additional Information
Produced in 1912, this depiction represents the Holy Land in Jesus' time. It provides a glimpse into some of the most debated lands in the world as geopolitical boundaries, based on religious beliefs and post-World War II political doctrines, have shaped and redefined the region throughout its history. There are numerous versions of Jesus' story, and many interpretations exist regarding his teachings, though his accounts for time spent in Palestine remain some of the most influential times in the history of the world. Jesus' teachings are central to the Christian Faith, which has been spread around the globe for centuries.
This depiction of the region shows it in a period of historical significance as the four accounts of Jesus' story, called the canonical gospels, which contain four separate statements of his time in Palestine. This map features a distinctive style and aesthetic that are immediately recognizable and transport the viewer back in time, creating a link between the present and the past that allows another level of connection to Jesus' life and times. In Christianity, Jesus is considered the Son of God and central to the Old and New Testaments.
This production was created by Charles Foster Kent, an expert on the Old Testament who studied at Yale and the University of Berlin before becoming the founding President of the American Academy of Religion from 1910 to 1925. This is an authentic piece of Christian as well as cartographical history.
