Yukaku - Professional Concubine
- Extremely Rare book. This is a very incredible compilation of photographic images which journals the visually stunning world of the traditional Japanese professional concubine. Most images are from the late 1800s, and very early 1900s.
Gargantuan kanzashi (hair ornaments), stilt-like Getas (raised wooden shoes), a stunningly ornate kimono outfit, and a retinue of young assistants indicated that the lady was an "Oilan", or top ranked Concubine for wealthy patrons. Her assistants were clad nearly as fancifully as the Oilan herself.
Lesser ranked concubines for regular patrons were known as "Joloo".
You will be thoroughly fascinated by the visual spectacle of this unique facet of human culture.
