FIESTAWARE RED-ORANGE
CERAMIC PLATE SHARDS,
4 OZ., 1936-1943 VINTAGE
with 14% natural glaze
FiestaWare, a top-selling brand of
household ceramic plates, used natural
material to color their ceramic glaze
during the years from 1936-1943. These
ceramics were made in USA by the
Homer Laughlin Ceramics Co. of West
Virginia. In 1943, the government's
Manhattan Project, led by Professor
Robert Oppenheimer, confiscated the
company's uranium supplies because they
were needed for the WWII war effort.
If you have a Geiger counter, you
need to have "test sources" to check
and calibrate your instrument. Each
clear plastic bag seen in the photos
has 4 ounces of Fiestaware red-
orange ceramic plate fragments. As
seen in photos, I have measured the
activity level of some of the larger
shards. The Ludlum 2100-1 scaler-
counter and 44-9 pancake probe
give the most accurate readings
possible: the 2100-1 scaler digitally
counts every pulse; it does NOT merely
do an analog estimate. The ceramic
pieces give moderate average readings
of approximately 25,000 cpm units.
Bags of the orange ceramic are available,
each for the $12.00 price plus shipping.
The heavy plastic bag weights about
half an ounce (14 grams).
FiestaWare red plates are still made,
but the natural content was
removed after 1943. If you buy
FiestaWare from later years, it
will look like the pieces seen in
the photos, but it will have no
activity level at all. My fragments
are guaranteed to be from the
1936-1943 era, with measurable
activity.
