Sweet marjoram likes the heat. It is perennial in warm or hot climates however it does not withstand frost. Nonetheless it is a culinary delight. Many rely on marjoram to flavor their dishes in a way that no other spice can. Others use marjoram to make medicinal tea for stomach discomfort and so much more. Origanum Marjorana enhances cardiovascular, circulatory systems and is an anti-inflammatory herb.
Medicinal properties of Marjoram are: antiseptic, antibacterial, antifungal, and antiviral.
Growing marjoram in the garden is a pleasure because it naturally emits a sweet aroma into the air and it doesn't call for nutrient rich soil. Indeed, you can save on the expensive fertilizer treatments when growing Marjoram. You can even grow it in small pots on your porch!
This makes Marjoram a great choice for balcony gardens.
Germination instructions: Sweet Marjoram requires sunlight to germinate. Likewise, you'll sow the seeds buy gently pushing them snugly onto the surface of moist soil meanwhile ensuring that they are also exposed to the sunlight. Take care not to use a heavy pour when watering the seeds and soil in the germination phase. A water hose for example will cause the seeds to sink into the darkness of the soil. Do however keep the seeds and soil continually moist. Germination time takes up to 2 weeks and occurs at soil temperatures around 70 degrees. To control temperatures, start the seeds in a tray that is placed in a sunny window. Tip: To speed up germination time soak seeds overnight in water before sowing.
